Every year, the world uses billions of single-use plastic bags. Different countries have different levels of usage, but the entire world must commit to reducing this usage.
In Vietnam, according to the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment, on average, a family uses 4 plastic bags per day.
Notably, only 17% were reused. Statistics from the Vietnam Plastics Association show that in 1990, each Vietnamese person consumed 3.8 kg of plastic per year, but 25 years later, this figure is more than 10 times.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment estimates that in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, about 80 tons of plastic waste and plastic bags are thrown away every day.
In order to reduce the amount of plastic bags, environmental experts suggest that it is necessary to develop mechanisms and policies to create a market for consuming environmentally friendly plastic bags, in which it is necessary to increase the environmental protection tax rate on plastic bags. difficult to decompose; at the same time, synchronously implement solutions from raising awareness to perfecting institutions and organizing the implementation of the circular economy.
In addition, relevant levels should issue regulations and standards on technology, promote the development of the market for exchanging by-products and discarded products to connect the chain between disposal-recycling-reuse. so that waste, waste becomes a secondary resource in the closed-loop system of the new production cycle.
Around the world, environmental bans or increases are in place in many countries. The earliest was in Denmark starting in 1993, causing the use of plastic bags to drop by 60% quite quickly. In Ireland in 2002, with consumers having to pay for plastic bags, the number of bags used has reduced by 90% and the amount of plastic waste has also decreased significantly.
